Evaporation

Evaporation
Aim: The aim for the two experiments we conducted was to separate sugar from both normal coca cola and diet coke using two different methods of evaporation.

Experiment 1 equipment and method:
Equipment
  • Bunsen Burner
  • Beaker
  • Evaporating basin
  • Diet coke and/or normal coke
  • 300 ml of water (We used 80 because we had a smaller evaporating basin, there fore we had to use a smaller beaker.
  • Tripod
Method:
For the first experiment, We had a Bunsen Burner placed underneath a tripod. On top of the tripod sat a beaker, which in our case contained 80 ml of water. The evaporating basin sat on top of the beaker, which we poured our coke into til it was just below the top of the evaporating basin.
The collar of our Bunsen Burner was turned so it produced a blue flame.

Results:
It took a while, but eventually, our coke evaporated leaving only a black sludge. This was the sugar that had once been in the coke.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, our first experiment went very well. We managed to separate coke from the sugar and got visible results.

Experiment 2:
Aim: The aim of our second experiment was the same as the last. The aim for the two experiments we conducted was to separate sugar from both normal coca cola and diet coke using two different methods of evaporation. The only difference is this time, we used a different method to get our results.

Experiment 2 method and equipment:
Equipment:
  • Bunsen Burner
  • Tripod
  • Beaker
  • Two boiler tubes (for this experiment we had a custom boiler tube with a rubber seal and a glass tube that came out of the top)
  • Beaker filled a third of the way with water and ice
  • Retort stand and clamp
Method:
For this experiment, we used a retort stand to hold the boiler tube with a rubber seal etc. The end of the glass tube coming out of the sealed boiler tube sat in another boiler tube. This boiler tube sat in the beaker filled with ice and water, which was placed on a tripod. The first boiler tube contained coke. The idea was, the coke would evaporate and travel through the glass pipe into the second boiler tube. The cold water would then turn the evaporated coke back into coke.
This is what our set up looked like:

Results:
We had some of the best results. Our coke almost fully evaporated and turned back into liquid in the beaker filled with cold water and ice, though it did look like it had been mixed with water. Like the experiment we conducted before hand, there was a black sludge at the bottom. This was the sugar left over from the coke.
