The first day of school was Wednesday the 1st of February. We got a chance to meet our teachers and had a welcoming assembly for the new year sevens and some year eights. This year I'm in 8Mt, Mr Mitchells class. He showed us a short presentation about himself and showed us our class site. The first week was great I got a chance to meet some of the other people in my class that I had met, but hadn't really talked to before.
The second week of school, we had all of our connect classes (Art, maori, science, P.E etc) and we met our new P.E teacher, science teacher and maori teacher. We did a paragraph of class writing and we started doing reading activities called Hilton Ayreys, where we were given a short story and work based around the story we read. The group I'm in for reading's first story was "A Brush With the Dark side". We also started forming ideas for a class treaty about our C.A.R.R school values. We learnt that the treaty of Waitangi wasn't translated properly as the translators only had a short amount of time to learn the maori language, and didn't quite understand the meaning of it. The Maori peoples idea of treasure was very different from the English's idea of treasure, and so we had to make sure everyone understood what our class treaty meant.
This week was our first full week of school. Monday week two was Waitangi day, and Monday and Tuesday week one were still the holidays. We started our weekly quiz and finsihed our class treaty which Mr Mitchell is laminating. In art we are learning about how to draw bodies. For us to do that, Miss Cairns showed us a short video about DC comics. When they started to be made and why. They were created after WWII as the creators thought the world needed a hero again. We started sketching DC heroes and villain to help learn how to sketch bodies. This term for technology I am in soft materials, and we are designing and creating our own 'Creepy Creatures.' Creepy Creatures are soft toys that are allowed to look like whatever we want. We learnt some hand stitching techniques: Running stitch, Whip stitch and Blanket stitch. We learnt how to do 10mm and 15mm seams. Mrs Laycock taught the ones who finished the rest of their work how to do Applique which is when you stitch a pattern/design onto other material.
The first three weeks of school have been exciting. I met new people and learnt a lot.
Sounds like it was a good start to the year. Your first day is similar to ours in Canada, just setting everything up, and meeting everyone. I hope your teachers were good this year and you good to meet some new great friends in your class.
